Noting the origins of ocean thermal energy technology in Europe, the paper reviews in particular the progress during the last 30 years, both in terms of national activities and international co-operation.
From the earlier design applications for production only of electrical power, to the more recent applications to potable water production, aquaculture, air conditioning, etc., the paper traces developments through to the involvement of European organisations in the early activities of the International OTEC/DOWA Association, and to the 1992 report and recommendations on "Deep Ocean Water Applications including OTEC" for the European commission.
The report will seek to highlight the significant developments which have taken place over the 30 year period, and which now make this environmentally benign technology a very serious, economically attractive, alternative to established energy systems in a number of specific worldwide locations.
